The debate will start at 9 p.m. EST/6 p.m. PST.

This is the only confirmed matchup that the candidates have agreed to after several weeks of uncertainty and wrangling. Trump had originally said he would skip the debate but later said he would do it. Since then, there have been arguments over its terms, including whether to mute their microphones.

The debate at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia was originally going to feature Trump and President Joe Biden, but when the latter dropped out, Harris took his spot. As for any other additional debates, the former president had proposed two additional contests on Sept. 4 on Fox News and Sept. 25 on NBC, but none of those have been confirmed. Meanwhile, Harris said that the two presidential hopefuls could be on the debate stage in October.

That could refer to the vice presidential debates that will pit Democratic running mate Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota against Trump’s pick, U.S. Sen. J.D. Vance of Ohio. CBS will host their exchange of ideas on Oct. 1.

The only other debate so far was when Trump and Biden shared the stage on June 27. In that contest, Biden had a disastrous performance that ignited calls for him to drop out of the race.

With ABC hosting the Sept. 10 debate, the network has turned to ABC News’ Linsey Davis and David Muir as moderators.

Here’s how to watch the debate:

What time is the debate?

The debate will start at 9 p.m. EST Tuesday and is expected to last 90 minutes. It’s being moderated by “World News Tonight” anchor Muir and “Prime” anchor Davis.

What channel is the debate on?

ABC News is carrying the debate live on its broadcast network as well as its streaming platform ABC News Live, Disney+ and Hulu. Several networks have also agreed to carry the event live.

Where is the debate?

The second general election debate of this cycle is taking place at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia. As was the case for the June debate, there will be no audience present.

Pennsylvania is perhaps the nation’s premier swing state, and both candidates have spent significant time campaigning across Pennsylvania. Trump was holding a rally in Butler, in western Pennsylvania, in mid-July when he was nearly assassinated by a gunman perched on a nearby rooftop. Harris chose Philadelphia as the spot where she unveiled Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate in August.

Final preparations are made in the spin room prior to the ABC News Presidential Debate on September 9, 2024 at the Convention Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

In 2020, it was Pennsylvania’s electoral votes that put Biden over the top and propelled him into the White House, four years after Trump won the state. Biden’s victory came after more than three days of uncertainty as election officials sorted through a surge of mail-in votes that delayed the processing of some ballots, and the Trump campaign mounted several legal challenges.

Which candidates will be on stage?

Two candidates — Harris and Trump — will be on stage, and it’ll be the first time that they’ve ever met. It’s also Harris’ first debate since 2020, when she and Trump’s running mate — then-Vice President Mike Pence — debated through plexiglass shields during the COVID-19 pandemic.

What are the presidential debate rules?

The current ABC framework for the second debate has the same rules for mic muting, no live audience or written notes.

Bay Area News Group’s Gieson Cacho and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Matt Dzierski throws three TD passes as Christopher Newport rolls in Indiana in opener https://www.pilotonline.com/2024/09/08/matt-dzierski-throws-three-td-passes-as-christopher-newport-rolls-in-indiana-in-opener/ Sun, 08 Sep 2024 06:13:22 +0000 https://www.pilotonline.com/?p=7355620 Christopher Newport got its year off to an impressive start, dominating Trine 42-6 Saturday at the Thunder’s stadium in Angola, Indiana.

Matt Dzierski threw three touchdown passes in the first half, two of which were 8-yarders to Colin Hart, for the reigning New Jersey Athletic Conference champion Captains. In between, Dzierski connected with Trey Hayes for a 37-yard score. Dzierski threw for 278 yards on the day, and Hayes had four receptions for 112 yards.

In the second half, after Trine — predicted third in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association — scored a touchdown on its first possession, CNU’s Gunner White ran for 28- and 12-yard TDs, accounting for most of his 71 yards rushing. Eli Sherfield capped the scoring with an interception return for a TD, and Maxx Lawton was 6 for 6 on PAT tries.

It was an encouraging start for a CNU team whose home opener is at 5 p.m. next Saturday against Johns Hopkins, which was ranked eighth in the d3football.com preseason poll.

Apprentice 44, Southern Virginia 9: The Builders began their year by hammering the Knights in Newport News as Grant Swanger threw four touchdown passes, three to T.K. Petty. SVU had won their previous six meetings.

Khamari Moore opened the scoring with a 1-yard run, and Swanger threw 25- and 22-yard touchdown passes to Petty for a 21-0 lead with 8:25 left in the first half.

A safety and a touchdown on a trick pass play brought SVU to 21-9, and Apprentice’s Logan Eastman kicked a 25-yard field goal with 8 seconds in the first half.

Apprentice didn’t allow a point in the second half, which included Swanger TD passes to Petty and Jasiah Beacham and field goals of 23 and 26 yards by Eastman.

Liberty 30, New Mexico State 24: Quinton Cooley had 112 yards rushing and ran for two fourth-quarter touchdowns, CJ Bazile Jr. returned a fumble 22-yard for a TD, and the Flames (2-0, 1-0) rallied from a 17-3 deficit against the Aggies (0-2, 0-1) in Las Cruces to win a rematch of last season’s Conference USA championship game.

For a while, it seemed NMSU would gain payback from last season. Back-to-back penalties against Liberty set up a 2-yard scoring run by Parker Awad to make it 24-15 with 7:42 left in the game. But Cooley answered with a 27-yard TD run 2 1/2 minutes later, and after the Flames’ defense forced a punt, Cooley ripped off a 44-yard touchdown to cap a seven-play, 90-yard drive that gave Liberty its first lead of the game, 30-24 with 1:05 to play.

Awad finished 9-of-21 passing for 156 yards with two touchdowns for the Aggies.

James Madison 13, Gardner-Webb 6: The Dukes (2-0), favored by more than 30 points, struggled against the FCS Bulldogs (0-2) in Harrisonburg but prevailed. Nansemond-Suffolk Academy graduate George Pettaway had 84 yards on 10 carries for JMU, where he’s playing far more than he did as a freshman for North Carolina — the Dukes’ next opponent, Sept. 21 in Chapel Hill.

Tyler Purdy scored the game’s only touchdown in the third quarter, and the JMU defense held on fourth down in the red zone late in the fourth quarter.

After being shut out in the first half, the Dukes scored on their first two possessions of the third quarter to take a 10-3 lead.

After the teams traded field goals, Gardner-Webb went on a 15-play, 8 1/2-minute drive in the fourth quarter that ended with a turnover on downs with 2:37 remaining. JMU then ran out the clock with a pair of first downs.

Wofford 26, Richmond 19: The Terriers (2-0) upset the Spiders (0-2), who are ranked 14th in the Stats Perform FCS Top 25, at Robins Stadium.

Amari Odom’s 12-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Davis with 10:09 left in the third quarter put Wofford ahead 16-12. Bridger Jones’ 41-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter gave the Terriers a 19-12 edge, and Ryan Ingram’s 3-yard touchdown run capped an eight-play, 70-yard drive for a 26-12 lead with 6:03 to go in the game.

Camden Coleman’s 3-yard TD run finished a 54-yard UR drive to pull to 26-19 with 3:48 to go, but Wofford held on.

Bucknell 35, VMI 28: Ralph Rucker IV threw for 340 yards and three touchdowns to lead Bucknell (1-1) over VMI (0-2) in Lexington.

Rucker’s two scoring passes to Josh Gary in the third quarter were the difference as the teams traded touchdowns in the other three quarters until the Keydets added a touchdown in the last minute.

Hunter Rice ran for 166 yards and two touchdowns for the Keydets.

East Tennessee State 61, UVA Wise 0: Jaylen King threw four touchdowns in Johnson City, Tennessee, for the FCS Buccaneers (1-1), who outgained the Division II Cavaliers 614-113 in total yards. Jake Corkren threw for 59 yards for Wise.

Mount Union 55, Ferrum 6: Noah Beaudrie ran for three touchdowns and threw for two as the visiting Purple Raiders, perennial powers ranked No. 5 by d3football.com, dominated after a slow start.

The Panthers, who are leaving Division III for Division II after this season, led 3-0 and only trailed 14-6 midway through the second quarter before Mount Union scored five touchdowns in the next 18 minutes.

Salisbury 48, Washington and Lee 26: The host Sea Gulls were 7 of 10 on third-down conversions and compiled 617 total yards, their most in a game since 2018. They ran for 348 and passed for 269.

Ronald Clark ran for 134 and two touchdowns on 13 carries, while Dario Belizaire tallied 138 yards with two touchdowns on just four carries.

For W&L, Apprentice’s next opponent, Ty Collins was 11 of 16 for 120 yards and three touchdowns, while Jacob Romero ran for 143 yards on 26 carries.

Delaware Valley 41, Hampden-Sydney 21: Louis Barrios IV threw three touchdown passes to Nahsir Morgan as the Aggies (1-0) beat the host Tigers (0-1), spoiling the coaching debut of H-SC’s Vince Luvara.

Hampden-Sydney’s Terry Hicks rushed for a game-high and career-high 107 yards.

Shenandoah 33, Methodist 14: Steven Hugney threw for 256 yards and three touchdowns, two to Borden Domenico, for the Hornets in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Domenico had 106 yards on eight receptions.

Averett 41, North Carolina Wesleyan 29: Ethan Ross was 15 of 20 for 222 yards and two touchdowns for the victorious Cougars in Danville.
Anthony Byrd led the Bishops with 192 yards and two touchdowns on 21 rushes.

Elizabeth City State 12, Chowan 9: The Vikings (1-1) beat the Hawks (0-1) in Murfreesboro, North Carolina. Jalen Razor scored Chowan’s touchdown, a 3-yard run in the third quarter.

Navy 38, Temple 11: Quarterback Blake Horvath tallied 234 total yards and four touchdowns for Navy (2-0, 1-0) in an American Athletic Conference opener in Annapolis, Maryland.

The Midshipmen’s defense recorded the game’s first points on a safety when Temple quarterback Forest Brock was tackled in the end zone for a 7-yard loss. Temple (0-2, 0-1) recorded its first touchdown of the year when Brock threw a 23-yard touchdown to Dante Wright to reduce the Owls’ deficit to 38-11 with 10 minutes left.

Army 24, Florida Atlantic 7: Bryson Daily threw for a surprise touchdown, but Army’s running game dominated during the Black Knights’ American Athletic Conference debut in West Point, New York.

Army all but iced the game with another trick play. A play after what would have been Daily’s second touchdown pass was dropped in the end zone on third-and-12, holder Matthew Rhodes scored on a 23-yard run around the left end on a fake field goal with 13:57 left in the fourth.

If that 15-play, 96-yard, 10 1/2-minute drive following an interception by Max DiDomenico didn’t salt the game away, DiDomenico’s stop of FAU quarterback Cam Fancher, a Marshall transfer, on fourth-and-goal from the 1 with 8:44 left did. Army used 14 plays to run out the clock.

The Black Knights (2-0, 1-0), who began playing football in 1890, are in a conference for just the second time ever. They played in Conference USA from 1998-2004. The Owls fell to 0-2, 0-1.

Coastal Carolina doesn’t let William & Mary’s upset hopes last long https://www.pilotonline.com/2024/09/07/coastal-carolina-doesnt-let-william-marys-upset-hopes-last-long/ Sun, 08 Sep 2024 03:45:56 +0000 https://www.pilotonline.com/?p=7356406 CONWAY, S.C. — William & Mary was seeking its second victory in three years against an FBS opponent, but it was apparent early Saturday night that it wouldn’t happen.

Christian Washington rushed for two touchdowns and Coastal Carolina rolled to a 21-point lead on its way to a 40-21 win over W&M on Saturday night.

Both of Washington’s short touchdown runs came in the first half, and the Chanticleers went on to lead 21-0 in the second quarter and 27-7 at halftime. The Tribe, ranked 13th in the Stats Perform FCS Top 25, beat Charlotte in 2022 but couldn’t pull off a similar victory against the Sun Belt’s Chanticleers.

Washington finished with 100 yards on 16 carries, and Kade Hensley converted four of his five field-goal attempts, including a career-tying 49-yarder for Coastal Carolina (2-0). Matthew McDoom returned a fumble 24 yards for a 30-point lead early in the second half.

Ethan Vasko, an Oscar Smith High graduate in his second year with Coastal Carolina, threw for 160 yards. He completed just 8 of 23 passes but rushed for 59 yards on six carries.

Darius Wilson threw for 165 yards, including a 62-yard touchdown to DreSean Kendrick, for the Tribe (1-1). Backup quarterback Tyler Hughes ran for a 6-yard TD in the final seconds, and Eric Bernstein kicked three PATs.

Elijah Burris’ 145 yards rushing, two TDs spark Hampton University over Virginia Union https://www.pilotonline.com/2024/09/07/elijah-burris-rushing-sparks-hampton-university-over-virginia-union/ Sun, 08 Sep 2024 02:39:47 +0000 https://www.pilotonline.com/?p=7356330 HAMPTON — Virginia Union running back Jada Byers came in to Saturday night’s game with plenty of deserved acclaim, but his Hampton University counterpart Elijah Burris left Armstrong Stadium with the glory.

Burris carried 35 times for 145 yards and two touchdowns, quarterback Chris Zellous also rushed for two scores, and HU rallied past VUU 33-21.

The two teams have battled 84 times since the series began in 1906. Virginia Union holds a 42-40-3 margin in the series, but the Pirates won the last matchup 42-28 in 2021. This was only their third meeting since 1994, when Hampton left the Division II Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association for the Division I MEAC.

Virginia Union is still in the CIAA, and Hampton is in the Coastal Athletic Association.

Hampton trailed 14-12 at halftime and 21-12 after the opening series of the third quarter, when Virginia Union went four plays and 78 yards to score a 57-yard touchdown on a pass from RJ Rosales to Reginald Vick Jr.

Hampton answered with 21 unanswered points.

Zellous and Burris both scored from 1 yard to help the Pirates take a 26-21 lead early in the fourth. Burris added a 21-yard scoring run with 3:32 for a two-possession lead.

Zellous completed 14 of 25 passes for 177 yards for Hampton (1-1), which was coming off a 30-28 loss at longtime rival Morgan State. Brennan Ridley caught a team-high six passes for 78 yards.

Byers, a Division II All-American, had 21 carries for 105 yards and two scores for Virginia Union.

The Panthers, 9-2 last year, were ranked fourth and 14th in various preseason polls this season. They lost in the D-II playoffs’ first round last year to Wingate.

James Madison pulls away at Charlotte as Suffolk’s George Pettaway scores two touchdowns https://www.pilotonline.com/2024/09/01/james-madison-pulls-away-at-charlotte-as-suffolks-george-pettaway-scores-two-touchdowns/ Sun, 01 Sep 2024 06:25:32 +0000 https://www.pilotonline.com/?p=7346830 Alonza Barnett III threw a 33-yard touchdown pass to Suffolk native George Pettaway in the final minute of the first half to give James Madison the lead, and the Dukes pulled away in the second half to earn a 30-7 win at Charlotte in a season opener Saturday night.

In former Holy Cross coach Bob Chesney’s JMU coaching debut, the visitors struggled in the first half, failing to convert two fourth downs inside the 49ers’ 10-yard line. But Barnett, who beat out 2022 Washington Huskies starter Dylan Morris for JMU’s starting job, found Pettaway to start the Dukes’ dominance.

Barnett added a 73-yard touchdown pass to Omarion Dollison a minute into the second half, and Ayo Adeyi and Pettaway — a former Nansemond-Suffolk Academy star who transferred from North Carolina — each ran for fourth-quarter touchdowns.

Noe Ruelas connected on a 43-yard field goal in the final minute of the first quarter to give the Dukes the lead, but Max Brown threw 26 yards to Isaiah Myers for Charlotte’s lone score and a 7-3 lead.

Barnett completed 10 of 18 passes for 219 yards with an interception and carried nine times for 89 yards to lead JMU. Adeyi carried 17 times for 41 yards and a score, and Pettaway had eight carries for 25 yards.

Brown attempted 45 passes for Charlotte, completing 22 for 193 yards but being intercepted twice. Terron Kellman had 76 yards on nine carries.

Liberty 41, Campbell 24: Kaidon Salter threw two touchdown passes, Quinton Cooley had 110 yards on the ground, and the Flames beat the FCS Camels at Williams Stadium in Lynchburg.

Campbell took a surprising 10-7 lead early in the second quarter on a short field goal and a 36-yard touchdown pass from Chad Mascoe Jr. to Sincere Brown. Liberty tied it with a field goal, then moved ahead for good when Salter connected with Treon Sibley for a 70-yard touchdown to lead 17-10 at halftime.

Sibley had five receptions for 109 yards. Salter’s second TD pass and short touchdown runs by Billy Lucas and Ryan Burger helped Liberty push its lead to 41-17 with about four minutes remaining.

Liberty has not lost a regular-season game under coach Jamey Chadwell, now in his second season. The Flames went 13-0 in 2023, winning the Conference USA championship, before losing to Oregon in the Fiesta Bowl.

Saturday’s game was the debut of Braxton Harris, who was named interim coach of the Camels in April.

Wagner 46, Virginia University of Lynchburg 7: Damien Mazil, a former Atlantic Shores Christian standout, threw for 135 yards and a touchdown on 5-of-9 passing as the Seahawks cruised past the Dragons at Staten Island, New York.

It was Wagner’s first season-opening victory since 2018. Mazil split time with Jake Cady, who threw three touchdown passes.

Wagner scored on the second play from scrimmage and cruised from there. Jaylen Bonelli made a 20-yard touchdown grab on fourth down for a 14-0 lead, and Wagner added a safety and a field goal later in the first quarter for a 19-0 lead.

After VUL, which is in the National Christian College Athletic Association, pulled within 19-7, Cady led Wagner on two straight scoring drives. He connected with Bonelli from 28-yards and Sekou Kamau from 4 for a 32-7 halftime lead. Cady added a 32-yard connection with Teree McDonald in the third.

VUL completed 23 of 34 passes but, counting sacks, had 16 carries for minus-29 yards.

Virginia Union 69, Kentucky State 7: The Division II Panthers, Hampton’s next opponent, routed the Thorobreds in Frankfort, Kentucky, as All-American Jada Byers rushed for 211 yards and three touchdowns on 14 carries.

VUU’s RJ Rosales threw for 233 yards and two touchdowns. Ricky Key Jr., a Woodside High graduate, had three catches for 87 yards.

Emory & Henry 38, Glenville State 7: Charles Mutter threw for 141 yards and two touchdowns for the Wasps in a Division II clash in Emory. The contest was stopped with 14:49 left in the fourth quarter after being delayed by 72 minutes due to lightning.

E&H’s Cam Peoples caught three passes for 83 yards and two scores, while sophomore wide receiver Jakari Mozelle, a Kecoughtan High graduate, had a pair of receptions for 23 yards.

Military

Navy 49, Bucknell 21: Blake Horvath threw two touchdown passes, Eli Heidenreich caught two for scores and the Midshipmen opened their season with a win over FCS Bucknell in Annapolis, Maryland.

Braxton Woodson also saw action at quarterback and threw for one touchdown and ran for another. The QBs combined to go 10 of 19 for 173 yards, three TDs and two interceptions.

Bucknell’s Ralph Rucker IV, who set a Bison record last year by throwing for 2,537 yards, was 11 of 24 for 122 yards and a score. TJ Cadden made five catches for 97 yards.

FRIDAY

Army 42, Lehigh 7: Bryson Daily and Kanye Udoh both ran for two touchdowns, and Army cruised past the FCS Mountain Hawks in West Point, New York.

Army marched 80 yards in nine plays the first time it had the ball, scoring on a 1-yard quarterback plunge by Daily for a 7-0 lead. Lehigh answered with a nine-play, 75-yard drive, as Luke Yoder raced 18 yards for a touchdown on third-and-2 to tie the game at 7 after one quarter.

Daily scored on another 1-yard run to cap a 13-play, 76-yard drive to put the Black Knights up 14-7 early in the second quarter, and they pulled away from there.

Norfolk State lands six takeaways at East Carolina but still is beaten decisively https://www.pilotonline.com/2024/08/31/norfolk-state-lands-six-takeaways-at-east-carolina-but-still-is-beaten-decisively/ Sun, 01 Sep 2024 03:10:59 +0000 https://www.pilotonline.com/?p=7347340 GREENVILLE, N.C. — Jake Garcia threw four touchdown passes and East Carolina overcame six turnovers with the help of a stifling defense in a 42-3 win over Norfolk State on Saturday night at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium in the Pirates’ season opener.

Garcia, a Missouri transfer, was 23 of 36 for 308 yards and added 39 yards on the ground but was intercepted three times, including on consecutive possessions by defensive back Terron Mallory, the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference’s 2023 interception leader.

Two of Garcia’s touchdown throws went to Desirrio Riles, with one each to Anthony Smith (18 yards) and Casey Kelly (22 yards). Javious Bond added a 14-yard rushing TD. The Pirates also lost three fumbles, with Kaleb Broadbent, Christian Ruffin and Dawson Rivers recovering them.

The Pirates, from the American Athletic Conference in the FBS, rolled to 506 yards on offense while holding the Spartans from the FCS to 114. The Spartans (0-2) converted only one of 18 third downs.

ECU’s Gavin Gibson had a 30-yard pick-6 that put the Pirates up 21-3 on their way to a 28-3 halftime lead.

NSU was unable to mount much of a rushing game, with Kevon King pacing the Spartans via 26 yards on five carries. Counting sacks of Daniels, the Spartans had just 43 yards on 45 carries. Daniels completed 8 of 19 passes for 71 yards.

Richmond Raceway to lose spring NASCAR race with Cup Series going to Mexico in 2025 https://www.pilotonline.com/2024/08/28/richmond-raceway-to-lose-spring-nascar-race-with-cup-series-going-to-mexico-in-2025/ Wed, 28 Aug 2024 16:55:36 +0000 https://www.pilotonline.com/?p=7341265 AUTO RACING

NASCAR’s international expansion in 2025 may boost stock car racing, but it comes at a cost for Richmond International Raceway.

The Cup Series will race in Mexico City in 2025, making it the first points-paying international race in modern history, NASCAR announced Tuesday.

That race, though, will replace the spring race at Richmond. It leaves the track with just a fall race.

“We’re still committed to Richmond,” said Ben Kennedy, NASCAR executive vice president and chief venue and racing innovations officer. “It’s an important track, important market. We’ve seen some exciting storylines certainly come out of that track over the past few years.”

NASCAR owns Richmond Raceway, but the Richmond area will be hit hard by the loss of a race. A study showed that a race weekend in Richmond creates nearly $169 million in economic impact for the region and about $42 million in tax revenue.

Shin, 31, a Seoul, South Korea native, becomes the ninth forward to sign with the team for 2024-25.

He spent last season in the Asia League with HL Anyang, collecting 34 points (16 goals, 18 assists) in only 32 regular-season games. HL Anyang went on to win the Asia League championship.

Shin started playing in the ECHL in 2021 with the Atlanta Gladiators, where he spent two seasons. He totaled 74 points in 101 games.

Two NCAA Tournament teams highlight Old Dominion’s non-conference schedule for the upcoming season, which the school announced Wednesday.

The Monarchs will face Ohio State on Nov. 28 in the Daytona Beach Classic and visit North Carolina State on Dec. 8. The Wolfpack reached the Final Four before losing to eventual champion South Carolina in a semifinal.

ODU will take on Christopher Newport in an exhibition game on Oct. 27 at home.

In the regular season, the Monarchs will host Morgan State, Bowie State, VCU, William & Mary, East Carolina, Delaware and a MAC school to be determined for the MAC-Sun Belt Challenge. Road opponents include Ball State, SMU, Oakland and Howard.

VT to play 11 non-league games

Virginia Tech will face NCAA runner-up Iowa at a neutral site and visit Georgia in the SEC/ACC Challenge as part of its 11-game non-conference schedule for the upcoming season.

Orioles send pitcher Trevor Rogers to Tides less than a month after acquiring him https://www.pilotonline.com/2024/08/22/orioles-send-pitcher-trevor-rogers-to-tides-less-than-a-month-after-acquiring-him/ Thu, 22 Aug 2024 18:17:38 +0000 https://www.pilotonline.com/?p=7334027 BALTIMORE — The Baltimore Orioles sent left-hander Trevor Rogers to the Norfolk Tides on Thursday, less than a month after acquiring him in a trade from Miami.

Rogers was optioned along with right-hander Colin Selby — a former Western Branch High star — and infielder Livan Soto. The Orioles also selected the contract of right-hander Matt Bowman and recalled left-hander Nick Vespi from Norfolk and activated infielder Emmanuel Rivera, who was claimed off waivers from the Miami Marlins on Wednesday.

Baltimore was a half-game behind the first-place New York Yankees entering Thursday. The Orioles’ pitching staff has been hit hard by injuries to the rotation, and the bullpen has been unreliable of late. Baltimore lost two of three to the Mets in New York, with both defeats coming on ninth-inning home runs.

The Orioles sent Kyle Stowers and Connor Norby — two prospects with big-league experience — to Miami in exchange for Rogers. The lefty is 0-2 with a 7.11 ERA since joining Baltimore.

The Orioles also designated left-hander Bruce Zimmermann for assignment.
