The Cavaliers (2-0, 1-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) then came up with a huge takeaway, with Malcolm Greene jarring the ball loose from receiver Taylor Morin for a fumble that was recovered by a diving Antonio Clary with 1:24 left.

That proved to be the biggest stop for UVA, which held on as Wake Forest had one last desperate possession with no timeouts in the final minute. That drive never reached midfield and ended with a frantic set of laterals as time expired.

Anthony Colandrea threw for 357 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Cavaliers, who trailed 30-17 entering the fourth quarter. His last scoring throw was a 24-yarder to Trell Harris on the left side of the end zone to bring Virginia within six with 10:37 left.

Then he directed a 12-play scoring drive that included two fourth-down conversions, the last being when he zipped a pass to Malachi Fields — who was locked up with a Wake Forest defender — to set up a first-and-goal. Brosterhous came on two plays later to punch the ball into the end zone.

Hank Bachmeier threw for 403 yards and a touchdown to lead the Demon Deacons (1-1, 0-1), with Donavon Greene hauling in 11 passes for 166 yards, including a 3-yard score in the third quarter.

The Demon Deacons rolled to 544 yards, but had some key drives stall with a chance to increase the lead. Donavon Greene had a chance to recover Morin’s late fumble, but he tried to pick the ball up and couldn’t control it as Clary went low to snatch the ball.

The takeaway

Virginia: The Cavaliers had won just three games in each of coach Tony Elliott’s first two seasons, but now have their first 2-0 start since Bronco Mendenhall’s final season in 2021, along with their first win in an ACC opener since 2020 and a big step toward bowl eligibility.

Wake Forest: Bachmeier played the entire game after sharing snaps with Michael Kern in the opener. Bachmeier was effective pushing the ball downfield to Greene, who looked fully recovered from the knee injury that sidelined him last year. But Virginia also got after Bachmeier for six sacks, while Morin’s late fumble ended what amounted to Wake’s last best chance.

Veterans ‘very much behind Donald Trump,’ Vance says https://www.pilotonline.com/2024/08/18/veterans-very-much-behind-donald-trump-vance-says/ Sun, 18 Aug 2024 20:31:44 +0000 https://www.pilotonline.com/?p=7324020 Speaking to the Milwaukee Police Association on Friday, U.S. Sen. JD Vance was asked about criticism that former President Donald Trump has received for characterizing the Presidential Medal of Freedom as “better” than the military’s top honor, the Congressional Medal of Honor.

Vance, who served in the U.S. Marine Corps, said that “the veteran community is very much behind Donald Trump.”

During an event at his New Jersey golf club on Thursday, Trump said the Medal of Freedom is “much better” than the top military honor because the servicemen and women who receive it have “been hit so many times by bullets or they’re dead.”

Trump was talking about the award after an introduction from GOP mega donor Miriam Adelson, to whom he gave the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2019.

Trump went on to call Adelson “a healthy, beautiful woman, and they’re rated equal.”

“I don’t think him complimenting and saying a nice word about a person who received the Presidential Medal of Freedom is in any way denigrating those who received military honors,” Vance said Friday.

QBs Tua Tagovailoa, Jayden Daniels play impressively in Dolphins’ preseason victory vs. Commanders https://www.pilotonline.com/2024/08/18/qbs-tua-tagovailoa-jayden-daniels-play-impressively-in-dolphins-preseason-victory-vs-commanders/ Sun, 18 Aug 2024 04:08:53 +0000 https://www.pilotonline.com/?p=7321681 MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — The final score doesn’t reflect it, but both No. 1 quarterbacks shined Saturday night as the Miami Dolphins posted a 13-6 preseason victory over the Washington Commanders.

Tua Tagovailoa went 5 for 5 with a touchdown pass in his only series for the Dolphins.

Playing for the first time since he signed a four-year, $212 million extension, Tagovailoa was sharp, throwing for 51 yards on a 61-yard scoring drive that he capped with a 13-yard pass to River Cracraft on fourth-and-1.

Washington rookie Jayden Daniels was solid as well, playing two series. He completed 10 of 12 passes for 78 yards and rushed for 13 yards. The No. 2 overall pick in the NFL draft led drives of 46 and 52 yards. The first ended on a missed field goal from 49 yards by Riley Patterson, who connected from 46 yards on the second drive.

Patterson went 2 for 4 on the night, also connecting from 38 yards but missing from 43.

Jason Sanders made field goals from 39 and 33 yards for the Dolphins (2-0).

Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel appeared to follow the formula he has used in his previous two preseasons with Tagovailoa, who has sat out the opener and the finale while making a brief appearance in the second game.

After Daniels departed in the second quarter, backup Jeff Driskel took over for Washington (0-2). He completed 11 of 15 passes for 82 yards and made an impressive run.

Northern Virginia native Trace McSorley, signed by the Commanders this week after quarterback Sam Hartman suffered a right shoulder injury in their preseason opener, played in the fourth quarter. McSorley, a former Penn State star who grew up in Ashburn, near the Commanders’ facility, went 11 of 21 for 93 yards and an interception.

Rookie edge rusher Chop Robinson, the Dolphins’ first-round draft pick, made his preseason debut and stopped Michael Wiley for a 4-yard loss late in the second quarter.

Tagovailoa was missing top targets Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, who combined for 2,813 receiving yards last season. Neither was in uniform.

Injuries

Commanders: Defensive end Jalen Harris limped off the field after stopping Je’Quan Burton for a 1-yard loss early in the fourth quarter.

Dolphins: Running back Chris Brooks sustained an upper-body injury one play after his 59-yard run gave Miami first-and-goal at the Washington 10 in the third quarter. … Center Sean Harlow walked off the field after he hurt his left knee in the third quarter. … Linebacker David Long didn’t return after a left hand injury in the first quarter.

Commanders: Host New England on Aug. 25.

Dolphins: Play at Tampa Bay on Friday.

Commanders sign WR Martavis Bryant, giving him a chance to play in NFL for first time since 2018 https://www.pilotonline.com/2024/08/13/commanders-sign-wr-martavis-bryant-giving-him-a-chance-to-play-in-nfl-for-first-time-since-2018/ Tue, 13 Aug 2024 19:33:59 +0000 https://www.pilotonline.com/?p=7307103 ASHBURN — The Washington Commanders have signed receiver Martavis Bryant, who hasn’t played in the NFL since 2018, when he had his third substance-abuse violation.

Washington cut kicker Ramiz Ahmed on Tuesday to clear a roster spot and give Bryant another comeback chance.

The Dallas Cowboys released Bryant in May after he was on their practice squad last season.

The 32-year-old played his last game on Nov. 11, 2018, for Oakland before the franchise moved to Las Vegas.

Pittsburgh drafted Bryant out of Clemson in the fourth round a decade ago, and he had eight touchdown receptions in 10 games as a rookie.

Just before he started his second season, he was suspended for the first of three times for violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy. He returned from the suspension in 2015 and had a career-high 765 receiving yards in 10 games.

Bryant was banned from the league for the 2016 season and played 15 games for the Steelers in 2017 before an offseason trade to the Raiders.

Caleb Williams directs two scoring drives in preseason debut as Bears roll past Bills https://www.pilotonline.com/2024/08/11/caleb-williams-directs-two-scoring-drives-in-preseason-debut-as-bears-roll-past-bills/ Sun, 11 Aug 2024 06:02:29 +0000 https://www.pilotonline.com/?p=7296802 Caleb Williams showed signs of promise in the No. 1 draft pick’s preseason debut by overseeing a pair of drives ending in field goals in the Chicago Bears’ 33-6 road win Saturday over the Buffalo Bills.

The 22-year-old out of Southern California completed 4 of 7 passes for 95 yards and converted a third-and-9 by bolting out of the pocket for a 13-yard gain. For Buffalo, Josh Allen went 2 of 3 for 22 yards and had a 7-yard run while being limited to playing the first quarter.

A minute into the fourth quarter, Bears linebacker Micah Baskerville returned an interception 53 yards for a touchdown.

Packers 23, Browns 10: Jordan Love made the most of limited playing time, throwing a 65-yard touchdown pass to former University of Virginia star Dontayvion Wicks on Green Bay’s third play as the Packers rolled to a win at Cleveland.

Vikings 24, Raiders 23: Rookie J.J. McCarthy rebounded from an ill-advised throw that was intercepted by Las Vegas starting cornerback Jack Jones with two touchdown passes against backups, a mixed but promising preseason debut for Minnesota’s future franchise quarterback in a home victory.

Rookie Will Reichard kicked a 37-yard field goal as time expired to stop Minnesota’s 10-game preseason losing streak. The Vikings last won an exhibition on Aug. 24, 2019, at home against Arizona.

Gardner Minshew, in a too-close-to-call competition with Aidan O’Connell for the starting quarterback job for the Raiders, was 6 for 12 for 117 yards and a second-quarter touchdown to D.J. Turner.

Titans 17, 49ers 13: Will Levis led touchdown drives on both his series as Tennessee beat San Francisco in Nashville.

Levis, who worked in the offseason to learn new coach Brian Callahan’s system, completed 4 of 5 passes for 35 yards, and he capped the Titans’ opening drive by scoring on a quarterback sneak.

Tennessee third-string quarterback Malik Willis, a former Liberty star, directed a scoring drive in the fourth quarter that resulted in 34-yard field goal by rookie Brandon Narveson.

Seahawks 16, Chargers 3: Sam Howell threw for 130 yards and a touchdown in his Seattle debut as the Seahawks had a successful preseason opener under Mike Macdonald, defeating Los Angeles in coach Jim Harbaugh’s first game.

Howell, acquired from Washington during the offseason, directed a pair of scoring drives in the second quarter. He completed 16 of 27 passes in 10 series and played until a little over midway through the third quarter. Seattle quarterback Geno Smith did not play after missing practice time last week due to knee and hip issues.

Jaguars 26, Chiefs 13: Parker Washington delivered the longest return under the NFL’s new kickoff rules — an ankle-breaking, 73-yarder that set up an early touchdown — for host Jacksonville.

Washington made at least five tacklers miss before finally going down at the Chiefs’ 30-yard line. Trevor Lawrence found running back Travis Etienne for a 9-yard score four plays later to give the Jaguars the two biggest highlights of the game.

Kansas City receiver Marquise “Hollywood” Brown, who signed a one-year, $7 million contract in March, landed awkwardly on a shoulder following an 11-yard reception on the opening play and did not return. He fractured his clavicle.

Buccaneers 17, Bengals 10: Cincinnati saw all it needed to see of Joe Burrow in its first series.

In his first game action in nearly nine months, having had surgery on his throwing hand, Cincinnati’s franchise quarterback directed a 73-yard drive, tossed a touchdown pass to Tee Higgins and then walked off the field.

The Buccaneers scored late to win, but Burrow passed his test. He was 5 for 7 for 51 yards, directed five first downs and completed passes to four receivers.

Saints 16, Cardinals 14: New Orleans rookie quarterback Spencer Rattler led the winning drive in final minute, providing a spark in his bid to become the team’s backup quarterback this season, and the Saints beat host Arizona.

Rattler — a fifth-round selection out of South Carolina who went to high school in Phoenix — spearheaded a 12-play, 56-yard drive in the final two minutes, capped by a 37-yard field goal from Charlie Smyth with five seconds left.

The Saints are trying to decide on a backup quarterback behind Derek Carr, and it’s a duel between Rattler and second-year pro Jake Haener.

Late Friday

Dolphins 20, Falcons 13: Atlanta rookie Michael Penix Jr. completed 9 of 16 passes for 104 yards in Miami’s home win.

Penix, the former Washington star drafted eighth overall, started and played the first five drives. He directed two drives that ended in scores — Younghoe Koo’s 39-yard field goal and Carlos Washington’s 1-yard touchdown run.

Taylor Heinicke replaced Penix with 6:40 remaining in the second quarter for the Falcons; the former Old Dominion record-setter was 4 of 11 for 11 yards and was sacked for a 7-yard loss.

Texans 20, Steelers 12: C.J. Stroud, in his preseason debut, threw a touchdown pass to Tank Dell and was 2 of 4 for 41 yards as Houston won in Pittsburgh.

Justin Fields, listed behind Russell Wilson on the Steelers’ depth chart, completed 5 of 6 for 67 yards.

Eagles 16, Ravens 13: Given a second chance after a Ravens fumble, Jake Elliott made a 49-yard field goal with no time remaining to give Philadelphia a win in Baltimore.

Elliott hit the right upright on a 50-yard attempt with 16 seconds remaining, but Baltimore quarterback Emory Jones — who had just entered the game — was sacked and fumbled on the next play. The recovery by Patrick Johnson set up Elliott’s game-winner at nearly the same spot where he’d just missed.

Liberty University, Jerry Falwell Jr. settle legal and personal disputes https://www.pilotonline.com/2024/07/29/liberty-university-jerry-falwell-jr-settle-legal-and-personal-disputes/ Mon, 29 Jul 2024 20:47:35 +0000 https://www.pilotonline.com/?p=7273950 LYNCHBURG, Va. — Four years after Jerry Falwell Jr. resigned as the head of Liberty University amid a series of personal scandals, he and the evangelical school founded by his father have announced a settlement of “all outstanding disputes on both legal and personal matters.”

In a joint statement released Friday, the university and Liberty’s Board of Trustees said it has agreed to pay Falwell an undisclosed sum in authorized retirement and severance payments and agreed on the conditions under which the school will use Jerry Falwell Sr.’s name, image and likeness.

Under the agreement, the trustees and Falwell said they “each take responsibility” for their part in the “lengthy and painful” disputes and litigation between them.

“Falwell acknowledges and apologizes for the errors in judgement and mistakes made during his time of leadership. The Board of Trustees acknowledge and apologize for the errors and mistakes made on their part as well,” the statement said.

Falwell announced his resignation in August 2020 after a provocative photo and revelations of his wife’s extramarital affair sparked criticism at the school. The photo, which Falwell posted and then deleted on social media, showed him with his pants unzipped, his stomach exposed and his arm high around the waist of his wife’s pregnant assistant. Falwell said at the time that the photo was taken at a costume party during a family vacation. Critics said the photo was evidence of hypocritical behavior from the leader of a university where students must follow a strict code of conduct.

The same month, a news outlet published an interview with a man who said he had a yearslong sexual relationship with Falwell’s wife, Becki Falwell, and that Jerry Falwell participated in some of the liaisons as a voyeur. Falwell denied any participation.

Falwell’s resignation marked a fall from power for one of the country’s most visible conservative Christian leaders. His father had aspired to make Liberty University an academic and athletic leader for evangelicals. After taking over following his father’s death in 2007, Falwell succeeded in shoring up the school’s finances and increasing its enrollment.

Two months after Falwell announced his resignation, he filed a defamation lawsuit against Liberty, alleging that the school damaged his reputation in a series of public statements. Six months later, Liberty sued Falwell, alleging he crafted a “well-resourced exit strategy” from his role as president and chancellor in the form of a lucrative 2019 employment agreement while withholding damaging information about his marital scandal that was exposed the following year.

Falwell declined to comment on the settlement but told The Washington Post, “It’s an extremely happy day for everyone.”

Chesapeake native Lauren Coughlin, 31, wins first LPGA Tour title https://www.pilotonline.com/2024/07/28/chesapeake-native-lauren-coughlin-31-wins-first-lpga-tour-title/ Mon, 29 Jul 2024 02:08:15 +0000 https://www.pilotonline.com/?p=7273017 CALGARY, Alberta — Lauren Coughlin, who grew up in Chesapeake, won the CPKC Women’s Open on Sunday for her first LPGA Tour title, pulling away from Haeran Ryu with a two-stroke swing on the par-3 17th.

Tied for the lead after Ryu three-putted for bogey on the par-4 16th, the 31-year-old Coughlin hit a 6-iron to 8 feet and birdied the 195-yard 17th. Ryu then missed a 3-foot par try to fall two shots behind.

“It was kind of a tweener of a club,” Coughlin said. “I could really only hit 6 and I needed to take some off it or else it might have gone over, especially considering how jacked up I was at the time.

“But I hit it pretty perfect and, the putt, I thought it was almost going to stay out to the left there and just dove right at the last second. It was huge.”

The former Hickory High and Virginia Cavaliers star finished at 13-under 275, closing with a 1-under 71 for a two-stroke victory over Mao Saigo in mostly calm conditions at Earl Grey Golf Club, with smoke from wildfires again leaving a haze over the course.

Coughlin earned $390,000 for the victory; she has earned $1,542,352 this season and $2,409,549 in her career, according to the LPGA. She turned pro in 2016, soon after winning the Atlantic Coast Conference individual championship.

“(This win) just makes it all worth it,” Coughlin told reporters after her win Sunday. “All the sacrifices that I made, that my husband (John Pond) made when I was just getting started, my family made when I was just getting started. A lot of people believed in me when I didn’t, and I wouldn’t be where I was without them.”

Saigo shot 69 a day after breaking the tournament record with a 61 on a tree-lined course with thick rough and small greens.

“Being in contention this week was great experience for me,” said Saigo, the 22-year-old Japanese player who is an LPGA Tour rookie after winning six times on the JLPGA.

Ryu also bogeyed the 18th in a 75 that left her tied for third with Jenny Shin (67) at 10 under.

“I can only remember my mistakes from the last couple holes, but there is always next time,” Ryu said.

Jennifer Kupcho was fifth at 8 under after a 71.

The leader after each of the first two rounds, Coughlin began the day a shot behind Ryu. Coughlin birdied the par-3 fifth, bogeyed the par-4 sixth and 10th and birdied the par-5 15th.

Coughlin was coming off a fourth-place finish two weeks ago in France in the major Evian Champions.

“I think just my story in general just shows that I’m always trying, always will to try to do things,” Coughlin said. “I am willing to stay in it. I don’t give up. I think I showed that perfectly today.”

Coughlin is in position to play for the United States in her home-state Solheim Cup in September at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Gainesville. She won in her 103rd LPGA Tour start.

“I don’t even really know how to describe it,” Coughlin said. “I’ve had people believe in me for a really long time, and I wouldn’t be here without their push and love.”

Ryu had her second straight top-three finish. The 23-year-old South Korean was second last week in Ohio at the Dana Open. She won the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship last year for her first tour title.

“I’ll do my best next,” Ryu said.

Canadian star Brooke Henderson, the 2018 winner, finished with a 68 to tie for eighth at 6 under. On Friday, she bogeyed the final four holes in a 73 that left her seven shots back going into the weekend.

“I feel like I’m right there,” Henderson said. “Great days like yesterday and today, total minus-7, so if I cleaned up the first two days a little bit, I could have been right in the mix.”

Chesapeake native Lauren Coughlin is one shot off lead entering final round of LPGA event in Canada https://www.pilotonline.com/2024/07/28/chesapeake-native-lauren-coughlin-is-one-shot-off-lead-entering-final-round-of-lpga-event-in-canada/ Sun, 28 Jul 2024 04:44:53 +0000 https://www.pilotonline.com/?p=7272549 CALGARY, Alberta — Chesapeake native Lauren Coughlin relinquished first place Saturday despite her best score of the week at the CPKC Women’s Open, but she was just one stroke off the lead entering Sunday’s final round.

Mao Saigo emerged from the wildfire-fed smoky haze Saturday at Earl Grey Golf Club with the lowest round in the tournament’s history. Five hours later, Haeran Ryu and Coughlin found themselves well clear of the rest of the field.

Coughlin, 31, a former Hickory High star and Atlantic Coast Conference individual champion for Virginia, is seeking her first LPGA Tour title.

Coughlin, the leader after each of the first two rounds, shot 66. She is coming off a fourth-place finish two weeks ago in France in the major Evian Champions.

“Hung in there for sure,” Coughlin said. “She (Ryu) was making everything there to start, so I was just trying to stay in my own bubble and not get too into what she was doing.”

Taking advantage of calmer conditions after two windy days, Saigo shot an 11-under 61 to jump from a tie for 46th to a tie for third — five strokes behind Ryu and four behind Coughlin on the tree-lined course with thick rough and small greens.

Saigo said through a translator, “I’m very proud of myself because that was the best round probably since I started playing golf. The wind wasn’t blowing much, so I was trying to make birdies on par-5s and try to keep my strengths with my iron shots.”

The 22-year-old Japanese player — an LPGA Tour rookie after winning six times on the JLPGA — holed out from 133 yards for eagle with a pitching wedge on the par-4 10th.

“I was able to feel the energy from the fans and that helped me play well,” Saigo said.

She broke the tournament record of 62 set by Song Hee-Kim in 2009 at nearby Priddis Greens and matched by Mo Martin in 2018 at Wascana in Regina, Saskatchewan, and by Paula Reto and Lindy Duncan in 2022 at Ottawa Hunt.

“I never set target score and I always try to hit the best shot each time,” Saigo said. “So today I kept the same attitude, and that added up to today’s score.”

Ryu shot a 64 to get to 13-under 203, making a 20-foot eagle putt on the par-4 14th.

The 23-year-old South Korean birdied the first four holes and five of the first six. She added a birdie on No. 10, bogeyed the par-4 12th and rebounded with a birdie on 13.

“She (Saigo) has a crazy day,” Ryu said. “But I started five holes and 5 under, so I’m crazy, too, I think. It’s funny today.”

Second last week at Ohio in the Dana Open, Ryu won the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship last year for her first LPGA Tour title.

“Last year is just last year. Last week is just last week,” Ryu said. “I just think about now and future.”

Rose Zhang shot 66 to join Saigo at 8 under. Jennifer Kupcho was 7 under after a a 68, and second-ranked Lilia Vu (69) and Hannah Green (71) were 6 under.

“I felt like today was sort of an easier day because less wind and some moved-up tees,” Vu said. “But I didn’t drive the ball well.”

Three-time champion Lydia Ko was 3 under after a 72. She won as an amateur in 2012 at age 15, successfully defended her title as an amateur in 2013 and won as a professional in 2015.

Canadian star Brooke Henderson, the 2018 winner, was tied for 18th at 2 under after a 69. On Friday, she bogeyed the final four holes in a 73.

“This is still a tough golf course,” Henderson said. “Even though the wind was down, you still have to pick your way around.”

JMU alum and PGA Tour winner Mark Carnevale dies at age 64 https://www.pilotonline.com/2024/07/22/jmu-alum-and-pga-tour-winner-mark-carnevale-dies-at-age-64/ Mon, 22 Jul 2024 22:49:21 +0000 https://www.pilotonline.com/?p=7265518 PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. — Mark Carnevale, a former PGA Tour winner who had been calling tournaments for Sirius XM Radio, died Monday, a week after working his last tournament, the PGA Tour said. He was 64.

The tour did not disclose a cause, only saying that he died suddenly.

The son of a college basketball coach, Carnevale was born in Annapolis, Maryland, while father Ben Carnevale was coaching at the U.S. Naval Academy. The family later moved to Williamsburg, and Carnevale played college golf for James Madison.

Carnevale won the 1992 Chattanooga Classic and was voted the PGA Tour Rookie of the Year. He later won on what is now the Korn Ferry Tour.

In 2003, he became tournament director of what was then known as the Nationwide Tour’s Virginia Beach Open.

He was best-known recently for being one of the lead announcers for Sirius XM PGA Tour Radio since 2005, and he most recently called the action from the penultimate group at the Scottish Open. He was scheduled to work the 3M Open this week in Minnesota.

“He was a member of that elite club, a PGA Tour winner, and then he held numerous roles within the industry, most recently as a significant voice in PGA Tour Radio’s coverage,” Commissioner Jay Monahan said. “Mark knew the game and did a terrific job of conveying insights from his unique point of view — and with an engaging wit and sense of humor.”
