]]>B.A.S.S. officials announced the 2025 Bassmaster Elite Series schedule Friday with nine events across seven states.
Elizabeth City will welcome more than 100 anglers to the Pasquotank River and Albemarle Sound on April 10-13 for a B.A.S.S. tournament’s first visit to the area since the North Carolina Invitational in 1981.
“Pasquotank River/Albemarle Sound is located between Camden and Pasquotank counties, and the waters’ striped bass population heads 125 miles upriver to spawn in April, leaving the largemouth the keys to the kingdom,” B.A.S.S. wrote in Friday’s announcement. “The largemouth should congregate in canals and small tributaries that enter the sound, which warm significantly faster than the main-river channel to create a perfect place to kick off the spawn.”
The Bassmaster Elite Series series, in its 20th year, also makes stops in Florida (twice), Texas (three), South Carolina, Oklahoma, Michigan and Wisconsin. The tour begins Feb. 20-23 on the St. Johns River in Palatka, Florida.
Bassmaster.com calls the Elite Series “the highest level of professional bass fishing tournaments.”

]]>But Tides fans can get a head-shaking replica of Holliday this week at Harbor Park. Norfolk will give out Jackson Holliday bobbleheads Friday as they host the Charlotte Knights for a 6:35 p.m. game.
A look at the Tides as they return home Tuesday and begin a six-game series against the Knights, the top affiliate of the Chicago White Sox:
Norfolk’s record: 60-72
New in town: Tides fans missed the Triple-A debut of prospect Samuel Basallo, a highly touted catcher who joined Norfolk on last week’s road trip, but they can see him now. Also, right-handed reliever Jacob Webb joined the Tides on Sunday for a rehab assignment. Webb is working his way back to the majors after registering two saves and 12 holds with a 3.08 ERA in the Orioles’ bullpen. He was dealing with right elbow inflammation.
In the Charlotte dugout: RHP Mason Adams was activated last week from the 7-day injured list and joined the Knights. Adams, 24, made his Triple-A debut with Charlotte last month after going 7-5 with a 2.44 ERA and 101 strikeouts in 18 games (17 starts) for Double-A Birmingham.
Schedule
Tuesday: 6:35 p.m., school supply drive.
Wednesday: 6:35 p.m., In Our Tides Era Night.
Thursday: 12:05 p.m.
Friday: 6:35 p.m., Jackson Holliday bobblehead giveaway.
Saturday: 6:35 p.m., postgame fireworks.

Hello, and welcome to 757Teamz Extra!
I’m Jami Frankenberry, sports editor at The Virginian-Pilot, Daily Press and 757Teamz.com, and I’ll be your guide this football season. Each week, I’ll bring you exclusive content on high school football in the 757. Let’s get right to it.
The season openers for most local high school teams are Thursday and Friday, and every team has a clean slate. Our staffers are just as excited about the season getting underway, so I asked our high school football gurus — Larry Rubama and Marty O’Brien — about the first game they covered and what they like most about the beginning of the season.
Marty: “The first high school game I covered for a newspaper, the erstwhile York Town Crier, was on Aug. 31, 1990, when Nottoway beat York 14-11 in overtime at Bailey Field and it felt to me like I was covering the Super Bowl. The first time each season I see players burst through that sign held up by the cheerleaders brings me back to the thrill of opening night 1966, when I saw York lose an equally exciting 19-18 decision to Newport News at old Saunders Stadium in downtown Newport News.”
Larry: “I have been covering high school football in Hampton Roads since 1999. What I love most about the first week is the excitement of a new season. Every team is 0-0. Every team has a chance. Every player thinks they can win the district. That talk, of course, changes by Week 5 when every team gets an idea of how the season is really going to go.”
You’ll be hearing regularly from Marty and Larry in the newsletter.
Introducing our new high school sports newsletter: 757Teamz Extra
Where are you headed this week? On Thursday, the Beach District features five games, including Tallwood at fifth-ranked Green Run and No. 7 Salem at Kempsville. Those games kick off at 6:30 p.m.
But I think the week’s most intriguing game is Friday when Poquoson travels to Lake Taylor for a 7 p.m. game. The Bull Islanders are a powerhouse in most sports in the small-school Class 2, and rarely do they get a chance to take on the 757’s traditional powers in football.
Want to know your team’s season schedule? A team-by-team look at the entire season.
Maury’s Ari Watford topped our annual list of the Top 50 high school football players in the senior class. Watford, a fearsome defensive end, is headed to Clemson and snapped a string of three straight wide receivers at No. 1:
Watford, though, kept the 757’s pipeline to the Atlantic Coast Conference going. Since 2011, 13 of 15 top-ranked players picked an ACC school. The only two that didn’t? Indian River’s Antwaun Powell-Ryland (Class of 2020) picked Florida and Catholic’s Teradja Mitchell (Class of 2018) chose Ohio State.
BUT: Powell-Ryland is finishing his career in the ACC after transferring to Virginia Tech before last season.
Maury and Phoebus are 1-2 in the 757Teamz Top 15, and they’re the prohibitive favorites to win state championships in Class 5 and Class 4, respectively. But I want to know: What other team can win a state championship? Why? Email me at jami.frankenberry@pilotonline.com, tell me your name and city, and I’ll feature some responses in the next newsletter – coming at you next Thursday.

]]>The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, citing sources, reported the trade, and Chargers Central and Ari Meirov, an NFL insider for The 33rd Team, reported the Falcons received a conditional sixth-round draft pick in exchange for Heinicke. The NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero also reported the trade on the NFL’s official X handle.

— NFL (@NFL) August 28, 2024
Heinicke joins a Chargers quarterback room that includes starter Justin Herbert and backup Easton Stick, and Heinicke will be one of two former ODU quarterbacks on the Chargers’ roster: Stone Smartt, who has converted to tight end, is in his third season with LA.
Heinicke was in his second season with the Falcons after leaving the Washington Commanders. He was one of three QBs on the roster along with starter Kirk Cousins — acquired in the offseason — and first-round draft pick Michael Penix Jr.
Heinicke, 31, has played in 38 NFL games and made 29 starts during the regular season. He also started a playoff game for Washington after the 2020 season.
Heinicke signed with the Falcons in March 2023 and was the backup to Desmond Ridder, but he played in five games and went 1-3 as a starter last season.
Heinicke grew up near Atlanta and played for Collins Hill High School in Suwanee, Georgia, before signing with ODU. Suwanee is about a 20-minute drive from the Falcons’ facility in Flowery Branch.
The move to L.A. continues an improbable NFL journey for Heinicke, who rewrote the record books during a legendary career with Old Dominion.
Heinicke was undrafted out of ODU and spent short regular-season stints with the Houston Texans and Carolina Panthers, appearing in seven games during the 2017 and 2018 seasons. He was out of football, and studying online courses to complete his ODU degree, when Washington pulled him back into the league in 2020.
]]>But the former Old Dominion star quarterback survived the NFL’s cutdown day Tuesday and made Atlanta’s initial 53-man roster. Heinicke is in his second season with the Falcons after leaving the Washington Commanders, and he is one of three QBs on the roster along with starter Kirk Cousins and first-round draft pick Michael Penix Jr.
Cousins was acquired in free agency this offseason and Penix was the eighth overall draft pick out of Washington. Heinicke has played in 38 NFL games and made 29 starts during the regular season. He also started a playoff game for Washington after the 2020 season.
Heinicke signed with the Falcons in March of 2023 and was the backup to Desmond Ridder. But Heinicke played in five games and went 1-3 as a starter last season.
But the arrival of Cousins and Penix indicated Heinicke would have to look elsewhere for a roster spot. Heinicke grew up near Atlanta and played at Collins Hill High — about 10 miles from the Falcons’ practice facility.
“Yeah, I kind of see the writing on the wall,” Heinicke said last month. “It’s nothing that I haven’t been through before, so I accept my role in any case. My role, for me, and what I think is to help Kirk any way that I can.”
Heinicke started in Atlanta’s final exhibition game against Jacksonville on Friday, a 31-0 loss. He completed 8 of 17 passes for 81 yards against the Jaguars’ first-team defense.
]]>Let’s count the reasons:
There are no sure things, but the Commodores look ready to make a like a buzzsaw (again) through the Eastern District on their way to a potential Class 5 championship. Maury went wire-to-wire at No. 1 last season, and could do so again barring a stumble against a rugged early schedule.
First-place votes are in parentheses, followed by total voting points.
Staffers Sonny Dearth, Jami Frankenberry, Marty O’Brien, Larry Rubama, Michael Sauls and Sam Saunders and freelancer Jim McGrath voted in the poll.
1. Maury (7), 105 points
No. 1 recruit Ari Watford, a defensive lineman headed to Clemson, leads a roster that had college coaches salivating: linebacker Carlton “CJ” Smith (Maryland), safety Kendall Daniels (South Carolina) and receiver LeBron Bond (Indiana) are just a few other major-college commits. Oh, and QB Au’Tori Newkirk returns after a 3,600-yard season.
2. Phoebus, 98
There are holes to fill, but the Phantoms will no doubt make a run at a state title four-peat. QB Maurkis Banks has only three starts, but he was cool under fire, tossing a last-second touchdown pass to win the Class 4 championship, and RB Davion Roberts returns after a 1,500-yard season.
3. King’s Fork, 89
Fresh off the program’s first outright Southeastern District championship, the Bulldogs and coach Anthony Joffrion are hungry for more. As in region and state titles.
4. Oscar Smith, 86
The Tigers? Ranked fourth? Makes sense after a four-loss season, but Oscar Smith has the trio of QB Lonnie Andrews III, WR Travis Johnson and RB Brandon Nesbit, and they could help the program climb back on top.
5. Green Run, 77
The Stallions were unceremoniously bounced from the region semifinals by Indian River last season, and that didn’t sit well with the returners, including star QB K’Saan Farrar.
Introducing our new high school sports newsletter: 757Teamz Extra
6. Warwick, 68
The Warriors could play the entire season without playmaker Messiah Delhomme, who suffered a broken leg during the summer. But scoring against this defense will be a challenge with three all-state picks last season still on the roster: DBs Iziah Emery and Xavier Carter and lineman Christian Corbin.
7. Salem, 57
A defense led by all-state lineman Jaylen Gilchrist, who has committed to Maryland, should help the SunDevils make their 15th consecutive playoff appearance, and maybe do more in coach Mark Hall III’s third season.
8. Indian River, 56
The Braves had some near misses last season, including a devastating loss to Oscar Smith on the game’s final play and a double-overtime loss to King’s Fork. Is Indian River ready to take the next step?
9. Lafayette, 51
The Rams reached the Class 3 state championship game last season in what was supposed to be a down year. Now, they’re loaded and ready to win another Bay Rivers District title and keep coach Andy Linn’s average of 10-plus wins per season going.
10. Granby, 41
The Comets were the biggest surprise in the 757 last season, winning seven games and making the playoffs under first-year coach Kendal Jefferson. Sixteen starters are back.
11. Cox, 31
Is this the year a team reels in Green Run in the Beach District? If the Stallions stumble, the Falcons — 8-3 in coach Tyler Noe’s first season — just might be that team. Cox has seven starters back on defense.
12. Nansemond River, 29
Coach Alonzo Ricks took the Warriors from four to nine wins in his second season, and the program took a monumental step forward last year with a rare victory over Oscar Smith — the Warriors’ first win in the series since 2002.
13. Lake Taylor, 19
Coach Hank Sawyer has an intriguing mix of veterans (all-state linebacker Jerome Brown) and youth (freshman running back Dannuel Maye) that should help him build on his 234 career victories over 26 seasons.
14. Hampton, 16
There figured to be a dip in the Crabbers’ fortunes after the departure of longtime coach Mike Smith. But Hampton rebounded from a three-win slog through 2022 with seven wins in former assistant Woodrow Wilson’s second season last year.
15. Churchland, 8
The Truckers have made six consecutive playoff appearances, and the return of RB Dontavius Booker — Hampton Roads’ leading rusher during the regular season last year — and other veterans should help keep that streak going.
Others receiving votes: Poquoson 7, Tallwood 2.
