After the home players came out of the Oscar Smith “Tiger Cage,” they responded to the fired-up Greyhounds (1-1) with the touchdown.

“We want to play starting play one, and we actually talked a lot about it,” Oscar Smith coach Chris Scott said. “We said, ‘Listen, the blockers are going to allow us to run one back to the house.’ There was a lot of intensity, and then emotions, but just us running our assignments, and that’s when we are at our best.”

Brandon Nesbit scored two touchdowns and gained 112 yards on nine carries for Oscar Smith. Lonnie Andrews III completed 7 of 14 passes for 120 yards and a score and ran for 109 yards on seven attempts.

Despite yielding touchdowns on three consecutive possessions, the Greyhounds stayed competitive in the first half, thanks to a safety and rushing and passing touchdowns by Joedee Shelton.

In the second half, though, the Tigers (2-0) pulled away. Reginald Wallace, Travis Johnson and Charles McGlown provided touchdowns, and Camren Pearson capped the scoring with an athletic, 21-yard touchdown on an interception.

Oscar Smith outgained Norcom in total yards 438-166.

Max Palmerton and Tyre Jefferies had two rushing touchdowns apiece as No. 11 Cox thumped visiting Bayside 47-9 Friday night in a Beach District game.

Palmerton and Jefferies combined for 146 of 179 rushing yards for the Falcons (2-0). Palmerton’s first touchdown, on a 6-yard rush up the middle with less than two minutes remaining in the first half, and his ensuing two-point conversion run put his team ahead for good.

The Cox defense forced four turnovers and limited Bayside (1-1) to just four first downs and 14 total yards.

The Falcons’ other scores came via a 12-yard scoring run by Jiwan Mack and a 28-yard interception return by Jacob Palmerton.

Cox has outscored its first two opponents 85-9.

Chiefs bounce back: Robert Hughes Jr. scored three touchdowns and Kempsville turned two turnovers into TDs during a 51-0 Beach District victory at Princess Anne (0-2).

Jason Galloway recovered a fumble in the end zone for a score and Jaylen Hatton returned an interception 35 yards for a TD for Kempsville (1-1), which rebounded from last week’s 28-14 loss to Salem in an opener. Hughes scored on a 1-yard plunge in the first quarter and added TD runs of 52 and 8 yards in the third.

Packers survive Truckers: Kyle Buggs threw two touchdown passes and Kinye Martin rushed for 148 yards as Smithfield (2-0) held off Churchland 14-13 on the Packers’ home field.

Buggs finished 8 of 12 for 136 yards with one interception, and both of his touchdown passes went to Ammon Rawlings (four receptions, 115 yards). The Truckers (0-2) trailed 14-0 after the first three quarters, but gave the Packers a scare by scoring 13 points in the fourth.

Zero tolerance: No. 10 Granby throttled Kecoughtan 79-0 in the Comets’ highest-scoring game in at least two decades. The Comets (2-0) have outscored their opponents 125-0 and dropped the Warriors to 0-2.

Granby had wins of 46-0 and 54-0 last season in the program’s resurgence. Those were the largest margins of victory for the Comets since Granby won 53-0 over Wilson (now Manor) in 2005.

Granby’s victory was the most lopsided among a number of shutouts involving 757Teamz Top 15 teams on Friday night: No. 5 Green Run blanked Kellam 49-0, and ninth-ranked Lafayette shut out Booker T. Washington 68-0.

Seahawk versatility: Atlantic Shores Christian scored touchdowns five different ways — punt return, pass (twice), run, blocked punt and interception return (twice) — in a 48-0 win over Catholic at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex.

Chris Higgins scored on a 40-yard punt return and a 25-yard pass, Malcolm Forbes recovered a block punt in the end zone and returned a pickoff 50 yards for a score and Corey Williams took an interception 24 yards for a TD. QB Micah Lance was 11 of 16 for 271 yards and two scores, including a 76-yarder to Josh Sibley.

Lafayette routs Booker T.: No. 9 Lafayette cruised to a 68-0 victory over Booker T. Washington. Baum Hogge threw two touchdown passes and scored two defensive TDs. Jael Love, Nayron Hudson, Breon Stokes, Brayden Smalls, Josh Simpson, Kordell London and Bryce Thompson scored touchdowns.

York dominates second half: York overcame Gloucester 21-6 at Bailey Field.

The Dukes went ahead 6-0 in the first quarter on an interception return. The Falcons came back in the third on AJ Wilson’s 25-yard TD pass to Conner Lawson, then recovered a pooch kick and scored again on Wilson’s screen pass to JeMarcus Tyler, who cut back against the grain for a 45-yard touchdown.

Sebastian Benitez-Marrero, in his first football game, was 3 for 3 on PAT tries as well as kicking off and punting.

Extra points

  • Indian River built a 46-point lead after three quarters and cruised to a 56-3 victory over Lakeland. The Braves improved to 2-0.
  • Great Bridge scored two first-quarter touchdowns and dominated Norview in a season-opening 34-6 victory in Norfolk. The Wildcats led 20-0 and won their first season opener since 2020.
  • In the Beach District, Ocean Lakes opened its season with a 51-7 victory at home over First Colonial and Landstown improved to 1-1 with an 18-13 win over Tallwood.

Saturday

Crabbers fall in thriller: No. 14 Hampton (1-1) lost 41-33 Saturday to King George (1-1) at Darling Stadium as the quarterbacks — the Foxes’ Dylan Koch and the Crabbers’ Marcus Chapman — combined for 542 yards passing. The Foxes made a clinching stop on fourth-and-3 from the King George 18.

Down 41-13, the Crabbers’ Casey Lassiter returned a kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown with 6:11 left in the third quarter. Lavonte Chapman’s 4-yard touchdown run and Marcus Chapman’s two-point conversion run made it 41-27, and Marcus Chapman threw a 33-yard TD pass to Davion Perry to trim the margin to eight with 3:58 to go. Hampton then drove from the Foxes’ 41, but came up empty.

Friday night football highlights | Poquoson races to early lead, upends No. 13 Lake Taylor in season opener https://www.pilotonline.com/2024/08/30/friday-night-football-highlights-poquoson-races-to-early-lead-upends-no-13-lake-taylor-in-season-opener/ Sat, 31 Aug 2024 03:34:06 +0000 https://www.pilotonline.com/?p=7344966 Poquoson scored a pair of touchdowns in the first two minutes and posted a 21-6 victory Friday night at No. 13 Lake Taylor in the opener for both teams.

The Islanders ran for 249 yards and never attempted a pass. They didn’t need to.

Dylan Bullard set the tone, taking the game’s first carry 49 yards. He finished with 131 yards on 12 rushes. Khaleo Smith followed with a 13-yard touchdown run.

Lake Taylor’s Dannuel Maye fumbled the ensuing kickoff and the Islanders recovered at the Lake Taylor 19. Cody Little’s 5-yard touchdown run capped a three-play Poquoson drive. Nolan Hinson’s second extra point gave Poquoson a 14-0 lead just 1:42 into the game.

The Titans responded with a 74-yard, six-play drive. Keon Johnson capped it with a 34-yard touchdown run.

Lake Taylor had the ball twice deep in Poquoson territory, but failed to score. The Titans drove deep into the Islanders’ end in the first quarter, but Jayson Kell intercepted a Lake Taylor pass at the Islanders’ 5. In the fourth quarter, Lake Taylor recovered a Poquoson fumble at the Islanders’ 12. But the Titans were stopped on downs.

After that possession, the Islanders drove 94 yards on 10 plays for the final touchdown. Quarterback Eli Tyndall capped the drive with a 1-yard touchdown run.

Smith finished with 71 yards and a touchdown. Little had 45 yards and a touchdown.

For Lake Taylor, Johnson had 38 yards and a touchdown. Jayden Yancey had two receptions for 42 yards. Promus Rovel was 11 of 26 for 137 yards, but threw two interceptions.

“You know they weren’t intimidated, they weren’t scared coming in here,” Islanders coach Elliott Duty said. “They executed, Lake Taylor made some adjustments, I think we adjusted again and I think we played very well tonight.”

Packers blank Norview

Smithfield forced four safeties, intercepted a pass and allowed Norview to cross midfield only once in a 48-0 victory in Norfolk.

The Packers got their first safety of the game on the opening drive, and Smithfield took a 9-0 lead with a Kyle Buggs 13-yard touchdown pass. The Smithfield defense then forced a three-and-out, moving the Pilots to their 20-yard line. On fourth down, the Pilots’ punter lost the snap, and as the ball rolled toward the end zone, he kicked it out of the back of the end zone for a safety.

Smithfield had another big opportunity to break the game open early when Norview went for it on fourth down on the Pilots’ 17 and was stopped. The Pilots’ defense held strong and when a Smithfield field goal was partially blocked, the Pilots tried to return it and were stopped at their 5-yard line. Three plays later, the Packers tackled the Pilots’ ball-carrier in the end zone for a third safety.

Kinye Martin, who finished with 58 yards rushing, scored on a 5-yard run, and Buggs threw for 100 yards and three touchdowns. Merlin Lance had two receptions — both TDs — for 30 yards. Donnie DeBerry had a 16-yard touchdown reception, and James Jones and Zyron Wells both rushed for TDs.

“You always like getting that first one, especially when you travel two hours to play. And no one limped off of the field, so we’ll take it.”

Storylines

Ram tough: The defense dominated and sophomore Baum Hogge stood out on both sides of the ball as No. 9 Lafayette opened with a 37-6 non-district win at Spotsylvania.

The Rams’ first-team defense did not allow a score. Linebacker Hogge, defensive ends Daniel Jackson and Tristan Harris and defensive back Naye’Ron Hudson were among many to play well on that side of the ball.

Hogge, a sophomore in his first start at quarterback, threw a touchdown pass to Jael Love. Harris, Tyree Wilson, Brayden Smalls and Josh Simpson all had touchdown runs.

New Warriors QB shines: Tyrell Grant Jr. threw three touchdown passes and ran for another score in his debut for No. 12 Nansemond River, which routed Bethel 46-14 at Darling Stadium.

Grant, a transfer from Norcom, threw a TD pass to Christian Jordan in the first half, found Quincy Gilmer and Taivon Douglas in the second half and ran 5 yards for a score in the third quarter. Nansemond River’s Melvin Brown rushed for a TD, and Jordan recovered a fumble for a score.

Tigers open with victory: Sam Christophel scored the game’s first touchdown and made at least a dozen tackles as Tabb began the season with a 17-0 triumph over Heritage at Bailey Field.

Christophel’s 1-yard run in the first quarter gave the Tigers a 7-0 halftime lead, and Tabb used a dominant defense to stay in front.

David Brooks kicked a 32-yard field goal in the third quarter, and Tabb virtually clinched the victory by driving 68 yards for a fourth-quarter touchdown. Landon Howard’s 3-yard run capped the drive. He finished with more than 100 all-purpose yards.

Bulldogs start 2-0: Brock Becker scored two touchdowns — on a blocked punt return and a reverse — to lead Norfolk Academy to a 23-6 victory over the Potomac School of McLean.

Becker scooped up a blocked punt for a score in the first quarter and gave the Bulldogs (2-0) a 13-0 lead in the third quarter on his end-around run.

Norfolk Academy’s Charlie Gross kicked a 22-yard field goal, and Sean Duffy caught a TD pass from Parker Codington.

No. 10 Comets cruise: Granby zoomed past Denbigh 46-0 Saturday at Todd Stadium as Shaineek Wright ran for a 45-yard touchdown and returned an interception 45 yards to cap the Comets’ 34-point first half.

Quarterback J’Shaun Reddin, Eamon Cuffee and Jonah Burrus scored on offense for Granby, and nose tackle Jahlil Lee returned a deflected pass into the end zone for the final touchdown with 10:44 to go in the game.

  • Third-ranked King’s Fork scored 21 points in the second and third quarters and cruised to a 38-6 non-district victory over No. 15 Churchland in Suffolk.
  • Peter Henderson rushed for more than 100 yards and a touchdown and Anthony Henderson totaled 100-plus yards receiving as Bruton blanked Northampton 36-0. Brandon Freeman caught two touchdown passes for the Panthers.
  • Tyson Moravec threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score and D.J. Caban rushed for 145 yards and two TDs to lift Greenbrier Christian (2-0) to a 51-0 victory over Broadwater Academy in eight-man play. The Gators finished with 423 total yards.
  • Micah Lance completed 18 of 25 passes for 302 yards and threw six touchdown passes as Atlantic Shores Christian (2-0) rolled to a 50-6 victory against Roanoke Catholic. Christian Franks had two TD receptions, and Jack Weaver rushed for 141 yards on 11 carries.

The SunDevils’ Willie Moore rushed for 166 yards on 20 carries, including a 22-yard TD in the fourth quarter to virtually seal the victory.

The teams went back and fourth in the first quarter, combining for 266 yards of offense and four touchdowns.

Tyron Kellam’s 40-yard touchdown run on a pitchout and Max Clatterbuck’s first PAT gave the Chiefs a 7-0 lead. But Salem quarterback Jason “Scooter” Williams ran for a 70-yard first-quarter touchdown, cutting the lead to 7-6.

Christopher (C.J.) Spence threw a 32-yard TD pass to James Releford, and Clatterbuck’s second point-after made it 14-6. But the SunDevils replied with a drive, and Williams’ 1-yard keeper and two-point conversion pass to Kasir Patterson pulled Salem even at 14.

The teams combined for 101 yards of offense in a scoreless second quarter.

Kempsville, which alternated two quarterbacks, finished a scoreless third quarter with a second-and-6 at the Salem 23. But Salem pressured Josh Hawley, who threw toward the middle of the field. Lovgren grabbed the pass at the 30 and scored untouched.

After Kempsville went three-and-out, Moore ran 7, 24 and 22 yards on successive plays to give Salem a two-touchdown edge.

Williams had 67 yards on seven rushes. For Kempsville, Robert Hughes ran 23 times for 74 yards and Releford made three catches for 58 yards.

Storylines

Braves rally on the road: Indian River scored on a 63-yard pass play with 1:23 left in regulation, then stopped a fourth-and-goal from the 6-yard line in the second overtime for a 37-31 victory at Varina.

The Blue Devils, ranked among the Richmond area’s top four teams in a pair of polls, led 15-7 at halftime and were in front 24-17 when the Braves recovered a fumble with 2:55 left in regulation. Each team scored in the first overtime and Indian River scored again to start the second OT before sealing the victory on the fourth-down stop.

Indian River avenged a 13-0 home loss to Varina last season.

Crabbers win in OT: Casey Lassiter’s 10-yard touchdown run on Hampton’s first offensive play of the second overtime gave the Crabbers a 25-19 victory over Woodside at Darling Stadium.

Hampton scored first in the first overtime, taking a 19-13 lead on quarterback Marcus Chapman’s 1-yard run. But the extra-point try was no good because of a bad snap.

The Wolverines tied the game at 19 on Tayshawn Campbell’s 7-yard touchdown run. But the second overtime ensued when the Crabbers blocked the extra-point attempt.

Bruins’ ‘D’ stands up: Jaemarree Parker scored two touchdowns and the Western Branch defense pitched a shutout against Menchville in a 28-0 victory at Todd Stadium. Parker scored in each half and Derrick Cook tossed a touchdown pass and Ky’Nique Baines added a rushing score.

The Bruins led 13-0 at halftime.

Marlins’ QB shines: Ethen Doscher threw touchdown passes to four different receivers in Bayside’s 50-0 victory Princess Anne.

Doscher tossed scores of 14 (Tychaun Clark), 40 (Seven Washington), 8 (J’Lahni Spears) and 14 yards (Halim Hardnett), and Jadon Hines added a 61-yard interception return as the Marlins scored 48 points in the second and third quarters.

Amir Lyde and Zavion Guidry added rushing touchdowns of 7 and 8 yards, respectively.

Extra points

  • Luke Ashcraft threw two touchdown passes to Gunnar Austin, and Dawson Fisher, Tristan Arvizo and Dayvon Williams-Rodriguez each ran for a score in Kellam’s 34-14 victory over First Colonial.
  • Norcom used a pair of 19-point spurts to dispatch Grafton 46-14. The Greyhounds led 19-0 three minutes into the second quarter, and after the Clippers pulled within 27-14, Norcom scored the game’s final 19 points.
  • Gloucester scored a touchdown in each half and turned in a sterling defensive effort in a 13-2 victory at home over Kecoughtan. The Dukes, who won three games last season and one in 2022, had not held a team out of the end zone since 2021.

Class 2 semifinals

Poquoson 2, Dan River 1: Eli Tyndall hit a go-ahead solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning and the Islanders turned an unconventional double play to end it Friday at Kiwanis Park in Salem.

Poquoson (16-8) plays Lebanon at 10 a.m. Saturday at Kiwanis Park for the Class 2 championship.

The teams were tied at 1 after the first inning, and no one scored until Tyndall launched the first pitch in the sixth over the right-field fence. Tyndall finished with two of the Islanders’ three hits.

Max Fritts pitched all seven innings to earn the win, scattering three hits and striking out six while walking two. Fritts’ defense ended it in the seventh inning when a ground ball to second base led to a forceout at second, then after an errant throw to first, Poqouson catcher Eli Monroe — backing up on the play — alertly threw to second to get the advancing runner.
