U.S. officials say Ukraine for the first time has begun using long-range ballistic missiles, striking a Russian military airfield in Crimea and Russian troops in another occupied area overnight. The strikes come about a month after the U.S. secretly provided the weapons so Ukraine could strike targets up to 190 miles away. One U.S. official says the delivery of the Army Tactical Missile System, known as ATACMS, was approved by President Joe Biden in February, and then in March the U.S. included a “significant” number of them in a $300 million aid package announced. The official says the U.S. is providing more in the latest aid package.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin is telling senators that pressure on Israel to improve humanitarian aid to Gaza appears to be working, but more must be done, and it remains to be seen if that improvement will continue. At a Senate hearing on Tuesday, Austin said the U.S. has seen changes in Israel’s behavior and hopes that the trend continues. His comments came during a session that was interrupted several times by protesters shouting at him to stop sending weapons to Israel. The hearing was the first time lawmakers on both sides were able to question Pentagon leaders on the administration’s Israel strategy following Tel Aviv’s deadly strike on World Central Kitchen humanitarian aid workers in Gaza.

The U.S. Army is slashing the size of its force by about 24,000, which is nearly 5%. The cuts will mainly be in already-empty posts — not actual soldiers. It's also restructuring to be better able to fight the next major war. The changes come as the Army struggles with recruiting shortfalls that have made it impossible to bring in enough soldiers to fill all the jobs. The cuts include jobs related to counter-insurgency that swelled during the Iraq and Afghanistan wars but are not needed as much today. About 3,000 of the cuts would come from Army special operations forces.

The military says efforts are underway to recover the remains of five U.S. Marines who were killed when their helicopter went down during stormy weather in the mountains outside of San Diego. The military confirmed the five deaths Thursday. Authorities say the CH-53E Super Stallion vanished late Tuesday night while conducting a flight training on their way back to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar from Creech Air Force Base. The craft was discovered Wednesday morning near the mountain community of Pine Valley. The names of the Marines haven't been released.
