William & Mary women fall in first of two games at Delaware despite Lake Taylor grad’s 12 points

A victory by the Old Dominion women's tennis team at Iowa State highlighted Saturday's swath of action off the basketball court.

A dominant second quarter by the Delaware women enabled the host Blue Hens to defeat William & Mary 79-55 Saturday in the first of a two-game Colonial Athletic Association series.

The teams will meet again at 1 p.m. Sunday in Newark, Delaware.

Jasmine Dickey had 20 points and 10 rebounds for Delaware (6-1, 3-0), while Ty Battle added 10 points and 12 rebounds.

W&M (4-4, 1-2) was led by Lake Taylor High graduate Chaniqwa Gilliam, a sophomore who had 12 points. Sydney Wagner, the Tribe’s leading scorer this season, had 11 points on 5-of-16 shooting, and Australian freshman Rebekah Frisby-Smith scored a season-high 10.

The Tribe went ahead 4-0 but quickly fell into a hole it couldn’t escape. The Blue Hens led 16-10 after the first quarter, then outscored W&M 25-9 over the next 10 minutes for a 41-19 halftime edge.
