Swimming is now prohibited at a Newport News beach, while two popular beaches on the Peninsula have been deemed safe for swimming again.
Water samples collected at King-Lincoln Park Beach, located at 600 Jefferson Ave., showed that bacteria levels in the water exceeded the state water quality standard.
A sign is posted at the beach alerting the public of the advisory.
Meanwhile, water samples at Buckroe Beach Middle in Hampton and Hilton Park Beach in Newport News showed that water has returned to safe levels. Swimming is no longer prohibited.
These beaches were closed due to elevated levels of enterococci bacteria, which is an indicator for fecal matter. Swimming in contaminated water creates a risk of gastrointestinal illness.
