Longtime Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg CEO Janet V. Green will retire at the end of the year.
The nonprofit, which builds affordable homes for families with low or moderate incomes, announced her retirement Thursday. The families purchase homes with a zero-interest mortgage.
During her time with the organization, Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg built and repaired more than 500 homes. In a news release, the nonprofit said she led the organization “with passion, dedication, and a commitment to community service for over 20 years.”
When Green took the position of CEO in 2002, she was one of three employees.
“I saw it as getting back to my social work roots,” Green, 66, who majored in social work at Michigan State University, said in the release. “I could make a difference and help people and still affect the larger policies that would impact people locally and at the state and federal levels.”
Green said she believes the local chapter of the nonprofit has lived up to Habitat’s motto of “building homes, community and hope” and that she’s honored to have served as CEO and is grateful for the team she has worked with the past two decades.
“Together — because everything we do is together — we have made a lasting difference in the lives of many families,” she said in the release. “I can’t wait to see what the future holds for this remarkable organization.”
Green’s retirement will be effective Dec. 31. In the meantime, the nonprofit’s board of directors has formed a search committee to recruit Green’s successor.
