A Virginia Beach police officer shot and killed a man who allegedly charged at him with a knife Wednesday night.
Police responded to a residence in the 1200 block of Quarter Way near the intersection with Lynnhaven Parkway following a report of a drug overdose at 10:23 p.m. The first officer on the scene heard a commotion inside and found a man and woman struggling over a knife in the upstairs bedroom, according to police.
“The officer gave several commands to drop the knife; instead, the male subject charged at the officer with the knife in hand,” police said in a news release.
The officer shot the man, 61-year-old Robert Miller of Virginia Beach. Miller was taken to a hospital where he later died. The officer was not injured and has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation into the shooting, as is common practice.
“Our prayers go out to everyone affected by this tragic incident,” Police Chief Paul Neudigate said in a statement. “We offer our comfort to the grieving family, our officer, and the community during this incredibly difficult time.”
This is the second time in as many days that a Virginia Beach officer has fired their weapon while responding to a call. On Tuesday, following a report of shots fired, police encountered 18-year-old Elijah Santiago who allegedly pointed a gun with an extended ammo magazine at the responding officers. Two officers opened fire, though no one was injured.
