The mast arm to traffic signals and signs fell onto a passing car in Newport News on Saturday, Aug. 3, 2024. (Pete Dujardin/Staff) Assistant Director of Engineering Bryan Stilley called the failure of the structure "a little bit of an oddity." He said city workers will string up a temporary metal wire between wooden poles to hang up the traffic signals and signs until a replacement can be built.
