Swimming and wading is now allowed on Fort Monroe and south Buckroe Beach after a swim advisory was lifted for the two areas.
Samples taken on Tuesday showed that bacteria levels in the water exceeded the state water quality standard. Beaches were closed because of elevated levels of enterococci bacteria, which is an indicator for fecal matter in the water. Swimming in contaminated water creates a risk of gastrointestinal illness. More recent samples showed bacteria levels have lowered to safety standards.
