The Virginia Department of Health has issued swim advisories for Fort Monroe and Buckroe Beach South.
Swimming and wading is now prohibited on Fort Monroe beach and areas at the end of South Resort Road by the James T. Wilson Fishing Pier in Hampton. Samples taken on Tuesday showed that bacteria levels in the water exceeded the state water
quality standard.
Swim advisories lifted for Buckroe, Hilton Park while warning issued for another Newport News beach
Beaches were closed because of elevated levels of enterococci bacteria, which is an indicator for fecal matter in the water. Swimming in contaminated water creates a risk of gastrointestinal illness.
Signs are posted at the beaches alerting the public of the advisory. Department officials will continue taking water samples until bacteria levels reach standard quality levels.
