Williamsburg-James City County Schools recently hosted a back-to-school event for families in need, providing access to information and resources — from backpacks to haircuts — in one location.
Now in its third year, the SPARK (Supporting Parents and Reaching Kids) event is designed to specifically address challenges for families and students in need. The event is funded through a three-year American Rescue Plan grant valued at approximately $100,000.
At this year’s event on Aug. 14, families had access to food, clothing and community resources such as eye exams, haircuts and medical resources. Nearly a dozen community agencies were present. Families could meet with school staff and learn about programs offered during the school year.
The intent of the event is to increase attendance on the first day of school by helping students with supplies and services needed to start school.
“We are thrilled with the ongoing collaboration between the schools and community partners, helping ease some challenges families in need face,” Angela Hill, lead school social worker for WJCC Schools, said in a news release. “Our goal is for families and students to leave with everything they need to be ready for the first day of school.”
