Virginia Tech has been picked sixth and Virginia 16th in the ACC preseason football poll, the league announced Wednesday.

Florida State is No. 1 after receiving 81 first-place votes. Clemson (55 first-place votes) is second and Miami (17) third. North Carolina State and Louisville round out the top five.

Following the Hokies were SMU, North Carolina, Georgia Tech, Cal, Duke, Syracuse, Pitt, Boston College and Wake Forest.

League newcomer Stanford finished behind UVA in 17th.

Ex-Phoebus star on Buchanan list

New Hampshire senior defensive end Josiah Silver, a former Phoebus High star, has been selected to the preseason watch list for the Stats Perform FCS Buck Buchanan Award, which is presented to the national defensive player of the year in the FCS.

Last season, he was named to the All-CAA second team after recording 43 tackles and led the Wildcats with 9.5 tackles for loss, eight quarterback hurries and five sacks.

UVA’s Sanker makes Thorpe list

University of Virginia safety Jonas Sanker has been named to the Jim Thorpe Award preseason watch list.

The award annually honors the top Division I defensive back.

Liberty’s Brylan Green, Navy’s Rayuan Lane III and East Carolina’s Shavon Revel Jr. also made the 42-player list.

Sanker was named an All-ACC first-team selection last season, leading the Cavaliers in tackles (107), pass breakups (11) and forced fumbles (3).

Va. Tech-Clemson game a sellout

Virginia Tech announced Wednesday that its Nov. 9 football game against Clemson at home is a sellout.

Any remaining tickets for other home games will go on sale to the general public at 10 a.m. Thursday.

William & Mary adds two guards

William & Mary men’s basketball coach Brian Earl has announced the addition of guards Colin Ndaw and Luke Kinkade to the roster for the upcoming season.

Ndaw, who went to IMG Academy in Florida, played for the Senegal U18 national team, which earned a top 20 world ranking in 2022. At 6-4, he averaged 14.1 points, 6.8 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 1.5 steals per game as a senior at IMG.

Kinkade capped his high school career as the all-time leading scorer at Neuqua Valley in Naperville, Illinois. At 6-2, he averaged 19 points, four rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.2 steals per game his senior year to garner third-team all-state honors. He also made 90 3-pointers and shot 52% from the field.

Kinkade is a three-star player, according to 247 Sports. He is ranked 69th in the country among shooting guards.

HU’s Daniel has shot at top honor

Hampton women’s soccer player Lailah Daniel has been nominated for the 2024 NCAA Woman of the Year Award.

The Fredericksburg native was a key contributor in the midfield and team captain for the Pirates. Off the field, she posted a 4.06 GPA.

This fall, she will be attending Johns Hopkins University to obtain her master’s degree in health administration.

While at HU, Daniel has served as president of the Chi Alpha Sigma Honor Society and has been a member of Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society, Golden Key International Honor Society and Upsilon Phi Delta Honor Society.

  • Virginia Wesleyan women’s track and field athlete Natashe Tate has been named the VaSID Rookie of the Year. She broke several school records in the indoor and outdoor seasons and earned two All-America honors with strong finishes at the NCAA Championships.
  • Three Virginia Wesleyan men’s track and field athletes have been selected as VaSID all-state performers. Ja’Marri Henderson made the first team in hurdles, while Javon Hills (hurdles) and Jordan Hall (jumps) each made the second team.
  • Former Hampton University softball player Emily Workman has been named Little League Softball Operations Coordinator. She had previously worked for the organization last year as a member of the Little League World Series Residency Program.
  • Virginia Wesleyan men’s tennis player Ole Behrmann has been named by the VaSID as Rookie of the Year and also made the all-state second team in singles. He went 14-4 in singles play this season.
  • Three Christopher Newport women’s tennis players have earned VaSID all-state honors. Raine Weis made the first team in both singles and doubles, Tessa Trate made the first team in doubles and Kylie Schaefer made the second team in singles.
  • Four Christopher Newport men’s tennis players picked up VaSID all-state honors. Vincent Truong made the first team in both singles and doubles, Nesh Kumaresan made the first team in doubles and Porsmyr Hansen and Ashton Legum were both second-team honorees.
  • University of Virginia golfer Deven Patel is No. 11 on the PGA Tour University Preseason Ranking of rising seniors. Patel helped the Cavaliers to their best finish in stroke play at the NCAA Championships as they finished third. He placed 59th individually at the NCAAs.
