Former Old Dominion star Yuliia Starodubtseva rolled in her first match in the U.S. Open qualifying rounds, overcoming Andorra left-hander Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva 6-2, 6-1 Monday at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, New York.
The match included rain delays with Starodubtseva leading 2-1 in the first set and 3-0 in the second.
Starodubtseva, who grew up in Ukraine, is ranked 147th on the Women’s Tennis Association computer. She is 10-0 this year in qualifying for tennis’ Grand Slam events, winning three matches apiece to qualify for the main draw at the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon. Her only main-draw victory among those events came at Wimbledon, and she mostly has been playing in tennis’ high minor leagues.
Starodubtseva, 24, ensured herself of $38,000 by reaching the second qualifying round. She will try to increase her Slam qualifying streak to 11 when she faces 224th-ranked Xinyu Gao of China in the second round.
Jimenez Kasintseva is ranked 190th.

Hampden-Sydney adds assistants to staff
Hampden-Sydney first-year coach Vince Luvara has announced the recent appointments of Virnel Moon, Tim Kidd-Glass, Melik Frost, George “Deke” Summers and Joe Freeland to his coaching staff.
Moon is the program’s new wide receivers coach/passing game coordinator, Kidd-Glass is the new safeties coach, Frost is the new running backs coach, Summers is the new quarterbacks coach and Freeland is the new outside linebackers coach.
Moon was an assistant coach at NCAA Division II Western Colorado since March 2023, coaching wide receivers along with kick and punt returners.
Kidd-Glass, a Danville native, played 34 games for North Carolina State and two from Liberty. He has coached at Stephen F. Austin, UVA Wise, Liberty and Martinsville High.
Frost was a four-year player and two-year starter at running back for H-SC through last season. He rushed for 2,041 yards and 25 touchdowns on 495 carries, adding 55 receptions for 467 yards and three touchdowns.
As a junior, Frost was a first-team All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference and first-team Virginia Sports Information Directors College Division all-state choice when he rushed for 943 yards on 201 carries and 12 touchdowns.
Summers, a 1967 H-SC graduate, enjoyed a 25-year career as a head coach and assistant coach at several high schools in the Roanoke/Lynchburg area. He was a quarterback and defensive back for the Tigers.
Freeland will be in his ninth year overall with the Tigers, last coaching with the program in 2021. He previously served as the head coach at nearby Randolph-Henry High from 2000-12.

Tribe reveals 10-event fall schedule
William & Mary coach Jeff Kader announced the Tribe’s fall schedule. It comprises 10 events, including four Intercollegiate Tennis Association competitions that serve as qualification for the NCAA Individual Championships in Waco, Texas, Nov. 19-24.
The Tribe’s lone home event will be the W&M Universal Tennis Rating Tournament from Nov. 1-3.
W&M opens the fall season at the Seahawk Invitational, Sept. 13-15, for the second consecutive season. It will play in Old Dominion’s UTR tourney Sept. 20-22 and will play in the ITA Atlantic Region Championships, an NCAA qualifier, Oct. 10-14 in Norfolk.
The Atlantic Region singles finalists and doubles champs will qualify for the individual NCAAs, which were moved from the spring to the fall. The NCAA team tourney remains in the spring.
