COLLEGE FOOTBALL
Quarterbacks Kyron Drones of Virginia Tech and Kaidon Salter of Liberty have been named to the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award preseason watch list.
The award recognizes the top senior or upperclassman quarterback, and 63 players made the list this year.
Drones passed for 1,993 yards with 15 touchdowns and three interceptions and rushed for 642 yards and four more scores last season.
Salter threw for 2,876 yards and 32 touchdowns and ran for 1,089 yards and 12 scores to earn HERO Sports Group of Five National Player of the Year honors.
- Oscar Smith wide receiver Alvin “Trey” Jones III announced on social media Wednesday that he has committed to the University of Buffalo, a member of the Mid-American Conference. He was an All-Region 6A second-team selection for the Tigers last year.
- Howard defensive back and former Churchland High standout Kenny Gallop Jr. has been named to the Black College Football Player of the Year watch list. He has earned many other preseason honors, including Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year.
- Virginia Tech announced Wednesday that its Sept. 7 game against Marshall is a sellout.

UVA’s Chang advances at U.S. Am
University of Virginia golfer Paul Chang rolled to a 5-and-4 victory to advance to the round of 32 at the U.S. Amateur Championship on Wednesday at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minnesota.
Chang’s teammate, Ben James, dropped a 2-and-1 decision to Jose Luis Ballester and is eliminated from the tournament.
Chang advanced to the round of 16 in last year’s tournament.c

Forward Young returns to Admirals
The Norfolk Admirals announced Wednesday they have signed forward Justin Young to a standard player contract for the upcoming season.
Young, 26, an Alberta native, was an acquisition of the Admirals last year and scored 11 points in 23 games before signing with a team in Germany for the rest of the season. He scored 17 points in 14 games with Herner EV 2007.

ODU 8th, JMU 6th in SBC poll
Old Dominion was picked to finish eighth and James Madison fifth in the Sun Belt Men’s Soccer Preseason Coaches Poll.
Marshall was No. 1, followed closely by West Virginia.
JMU midfielder Kevin Larsson and defender Luca Nikolai each made the Preseason All-Sun Belt Team.
- William & Mary forward Lucas Caldas has made the Preseason All-CAA Team and teammate Aidan Morrison earned honorable mention. W&M was picked 10th in the league’s preseason poll. Hofstra was No. 1, followed by Monmouth.
- Virginia was picked sixth and Virginia Tech 14th in the ACC Men’s Soccer Preseason Coaches Poll. Clemson was No. 1, followed by Notre Dame. UVA defender Paul Wiese and Virginia Tech defender Willie Cardona both made the league’s Preseason Watch List.
- The Old Dominion women’s soccer team kicks off its 2024 season at 7 p.m. today against VCU at ODU Soccer Stadium. The game will be be streamed on ESPN+. The Monarchs finished 13-3-5 and won their second straight Sun Belt Conference title last season.

W&M placed 16 on scholar list
The William & Mary women’s gymnastics team had 16 athletes earn Scholastic All-American honors from the Women’s Collegiate Gymnastics Association.
The list includes Michelle Ngo, Sarah Kuper, Anne Marie Kuebler, Brynn Vetrano, Caroline Blatchford, Sofia Huang, Sarah Wozniak, Sophie Chandler, Grace Costello, Catherine Bare, Avery Bernier, Lily Walker, Ascha Laird, Katelyn Nels, Melanie Faulkner and Summer Penzi.
