JAMES CITY — A 68-year-old James City County man has been charged with a felony hit-and-run after a pedestrian was struck, according to the James City County Police Department. The victim is currently in critical condition at Riverside Regional Hospital in Newport News.
The hit-and-run occurred around 8 p.m. on Thursday at the 2900 block of Lake Powell Road. The James City County police and fire departments responded to reports of a pedestrian hit by a black Genesis SUV, which fled the scene before emergency personnel arrived. The female victim suffered serious injuries.
Following the hit-and-run, the suspect, Michael Atalay, returned to the scene in a different vehicle and is cooperating with police. Atalay was charged and transported to the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail, where he was later released on an unsecured bond.
There may be additional charges following the course of the ongoing investigation.
