Chesapeake council files lawsuit against member Don Carey over election dispute

The Chesapeake City Council formally filed a writ of mandamus petition in Chesapeake Circuit Court on July 31, 2024, against sitting council member Don Carey. The lawsuit comes after a city charter dispute over whether Carey is required to step down as he seeks the mayor’s seat in the upcoming Nov. 5 election.
