PORTSMOUTH — Voters will have an opportunity to hear from candidates running for Portsmouth City Council in a forum Thursday.

The Martin Luther King Jr. Leadership Steering Committee, a political action group in Portsmouth, is hosting a candidate forum discussion at I.C. Norcom High School, beginning at 6:30 p.m. All 11 candidates vying for three seats on City Council have been invited.

Candidates include council incumbents De’Andre A. Barnes and Mark M. Whitaker, with challenges from William Smith “Bill” Dodson Jr., Sharon D. Anderson, Bruce G. LaLonde, Yolanda C. “Edmonds” Thomas, Davy Smith III, Malinda A. Johnson, Kathryn W. “Kitty” Bryant, Mia N. Phillips and Kelvin E. Turner. The three candidates with the most votes will win the election.

Some questions will be prepared in advance, according to the committee, and the forum will be moderated. The audience will also have an opportunity to ask questions.

The races are nonpartisan. Election Day is Nov. 5.
