Dr. Newton Byrd Miller OBITUARY

Dr. Newton Byrd Miller passed away Saturday, August 31, 2024 at his Mecklenburg County home surrounded by his family after a battle with cancer. He was the son of William R. Miller and Katharine Byrd Miller, brother of Katharine Waring Miller and William R. Miller, III; however, his greatest joys revolved around his children Newton (Ty) B. Miller, Jr. and wife Anita; Katharine (Kit) Miller Bergoon and husband Brent; Whitfield Bell Miller and wife Katie; and Elizabeth Miller Villegas and husband Jason, and their families, especially his twelve amazing grandchildren and five great grandchildren he dearly loved. It is not a cliché to say empathetically that “the Lord threw the mold away” when he created Newt. An amazing and talented artist, composer, musician, actor, championship outboard motorboat racer, high school 3 sport letterman in football, track, with national recognition in wrestling, father, Navy pilot, faithful friend, and so much more. As a much loved and respected Obstetrician and Gynecologist, he delivered so many thousands of children into the world and earned the love, respect, and affection of so many parents from Tidewater to Alaska to Southside Virginia. He and his close friends played, sang, and entertained in numerous night spots from Ketchikan, Alaska to Virginia’s Tidewater and the Eastern Shore to South Hill. It can be successfully argued that nobody since Thomas Jefferson has had as many widely held interests, accomplishments, and talents. He was indeed a “Renaissance man” and will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him. The family will hold a private ceremony at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Eastern Virginia Medical School via the EVMS Foundation at EVMS Foundation, P.O. Box 5, Norfolk, VA 23501-0005.
