Norfolk Public Schools alerted parents this week that schools will have a remote learning day on April 8 to “better ensure their safety” during the solar eclipse.
The eclipse is expected to begin at approximately 2:02 p.m. with its maximum view around 3:20 p.m. and lasting until about 4 p.m. Officials said it coincides with many students being dismissed.
“Even with a partial eclipse, everyone must protect their eyes if they choose to view the eclipse,” reads a message posted on the division’s website. “According to research, exposing your eyes to the sun without proper eye protection during a solar eclipse can cause ‘eclipse blindness’ or retinal burns, also known as solar retinopathy. This exposure to the light can cause damage or even destroy cells in the retina.”
There won’t be any virtual teaching; students are instructed to use the day for asynchronous learning — activities will be sent home with students on March 28. Norfolk’s spring break is April 1-5. No makeup day will be necessary.
